2nd Saturday Street Art Tours are BACK for a 2018 Season!
Streets Dept's 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours are a new kind of guided walking tour that explore the art in Philadelphia's public spaces one neighborhood at a time. Each month we walk a different neighborhood in search of street art, murals – and more! Each tour hosted and led by StreetsDept.com's founder Conrad Benner.
For this, the second tour of our 2018 Season, we'll be checking out one of Philadelphia's most concentrated and historically significant districts for murals, which includes The Gayborhood, the streets adjacent to the Avenue of the Arts, and West South Street!
Whenever I get a tweet or an email from a street art/mural fan visiting from out of town, this is the section of our city that I always recommend they spend a few hours exploring. That's because these neighborhoods are filled with literally dozens of some of my FAVORITE murals in Philly, including the Mural Arts Philadelphia murals in The Gayborhood that were created with the visionary Tony Goldman (the creator of Miami's Wnywood Walls,) a relationship that ultimately marked a shift in the mural making practice of Mural Arts...but more on that on the tour!
I'm your host for this and every 2nd Saturday Street Art Tour. My name's Conrad Benner, and I'm a Philly-born photographer, curator, and the founder of StreetsDept.com, an award winning photo-blog that's been discovering art on streets of Philadelphia since 2011. Over the years, I have been named Philly's ‘Best Art Curator’ by Philadelphia Magazine, and my blog named one of the ‘Best Blogs for Travellers’ by The Guardian. A few quick notes before you get your ticket(s): 1) This month’s tour will start at the South Gate of Philadelphia's City Hall and zig-zag through a few neighborhoods ending within a short walk of the South Street stop of SEPTA's Broad Street Line Subway. 2) Tours include roughly two hours of walking, which may not be suitable for all. Please feel free to email me at StreetsDept [at] gmail [dot] com, if you have any questions. 3) Tours are rain or shine, so be sure to dress accordingly. 4) Lastly, tours are ticketed and tickets/names will be checked at the start of each tour; you can bring a digital or printed copy of your ticket, or just check-in with the ticket purchaser's name!
