Streets Dept's 2nd Saturday Street Art Tours are a new kind of guided walking tour that explore the art in Philadelphia's public spaces one neighborhood at a time. Each month we walk a different neighborhood in search of street art, murals – and more! Each tour hosted and led by StreetsDept.com's founder Conrad Benner.
ABOUT THE TOUR: For this, the sixth 2nd Saturday tour of our 2018 Season, we'll be taking a very special walking tour of Art At The Airport! PHL Airport’s Exhibition Program is a nationally-recognized, award-winning visual arts initiative. The purpose of this program is to provide visibility for Philadelphia’s unique cultural life and to enrich the experience of the traveling public. And, as you'll see on this tour, in addition to featuring the work of contemporary artists who primarily show in galleries, Art At The Airport showcases the work of many, many Philadelphia street artists and muralists. They also currently have a Streets Dept exhibition that's up through the end of October.
There's literally never been a better time to check out Art At The Airport, because this fall marks their 20th anniversary. And to celebrate they've got a special exhibition that will be installed just in time for our tour that will feature the work of 20 Philadelphia artists, including a few Philly street art and mural staples like Joe Boruchow, Ishknits, Nosego, Binding Things, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Jay Walker, and more. Even the dang ceiling tiles have art on them now!
And as an added bonus (and a thank you for going through TSA to take this tour,) we're inviting a few of the current exhibiting artists on the tour with us to talk about their work and careers. Y'all, it's going to be such a fun afternoon!
ABOUT YOUR HOSTS: Your tour will be led by Conrad Benner and Leah Douglas. Conrad is the host of this and every 2nd Saturday Street Art Tour; he's a Philly-born photographer, curator, and the founder of StreetsDept.com, an award winning photo-blog that's been discovering art on streets of Philadelphia since 2011. Leah, our guest co-host for this month's tour, is the Director of Exhibitions at Philadelphia International Airport; since 1998, she has curated and organized more than 300 exhibits that have featured artwork by Philadelphia area artists and arts institutions.
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU GET YOUR TICKETS:
- Due to the special nature of this tour going through the airport, we are required by TSA to collect the following information from each ticket holder by September 4 to make sure no one is on the No Fly List: full name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your social security number. We will be collecting this information after you purchase your ticket via Google Forms. If you purchase more than one ticket, I'll ask you to have your guests complete the form as well.
- We will be entering the airport through a special TSA lane (TSA Pre-check will not apply.) And like flying out of an airport, you must bring a valid driver’s license or passport.
- We are renting a bus to take us to and from the airport, so the start and end location of this tour will be the SW corner of 6th and Market streets (outside in front of the La Colombe!) We are doing this to make entry into the airport as quick and seamless as possible. We will also have a little introduction on the bus! All that's to say that you would not be able to meet us at the airport, this short bus ride is apart of the tour!
