Streets Dept Excursions are guided tours of Philly's art and public space! Each month we lead curated walks around the "mural capital of the world." While the focus and location of each month's Excursion is always different, overall we explore three main themes: 1) public/street art, 2) public space/architecture, and 3) independent art spaces.
OUR MAY 2024 EXCURSION / WHAT YOU'LL SEE:
Philly's Chinatown is rich with public art that speaks to its past, present, and future! There's a little bit of everything on this walk, from the iconic Chinatown Friendship Gate (pictured) and murals rememebring the neighborhood's fight against the contruction of I-676 to murals painted on the sidwalks atop of I-676 and public spaces that serve as playgrounds for even more public art. And as many of you have long-requested, we're mixing it up on this Excursion and hosting it on a weeknight! Hoping this allows for new folks to see what we do. (For the curious, at this time of year the sun sets at 8:17pm, so our tour will be in daylight.)
YOUR TOUR GUIDES:
Streets Dept Excursions are led by Conrad Benner and Eric Dale. Born and raised in Fishtown, Conrad is the founder of StreetsDept.com, which has been documenting and celebrating Philly's art world since January 2011. Eric Dale is an independent creator who joined Streets Dept in 2017 and contributes photos, articles, and artist interviews to the blog.
IMPORTANT TOUR NOTES:
- All Excursions are rain or shine–so it never hurts to bring an umbrella!
- Please note that this Excusion will include roughly a mile and a half of walking on flat sidewalk.
- This tour will start and end at 10th and Arch Streets.
- Tours are ticketed and tickets/names will be checked at the start of each tour; you can bring a digital or printed copy of your ticket, or just check-in with the ticket purchaser's name!
